Explore Door County by Candlelight This Winter
Published
Candlelight events have become a winter tradition in Door County for good reason. They’re low-key, welcoming, and centered on being outside when most people would rather stay in. From quiet walks to ski and snowshoe routes, these extraordinary evening experiences offer a fresh way to spend a winter night, and a reminder that the season isn’t short on things to do in Door County.
Luminary-Lit Hike at Crossroads at Big Creek
On January 16 and February 13, Crossroads at Big Creek is hosting a Luminary-lit Hike that turns an ordinary winter walk into a memorable evening. The trail is lined with luminaries, making it easy to follow as daylight fades and the preserve grows quieter.
The experience doesn’t end at the trailhead. A campfire and hot chocolate give everyone a reason to stick around, warm up, and reminisce about this amazing Door County experience. The event is free and open to the public, and leashed dogs are welcome, making it an easy addition to a winter stay.
Candlelight Ski at Newport State Park
The Candlelight Ski, Hike, or Snowshoe is back for its 35th year at Newport State Park, and it’s still one of the best ways to spend a winter evening in Door County. As night falls on February 14, the trails light up, and the park fills with skiers, hikers, and snowshoers moving at their own pace.
The terrain is mostly flat, making it approachable for beginners but still enjoyable for those with more experience. Start anytime between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. from the Picnic Area parking lot (Lot 3). At the far end of the trail, a bonfire, hot cocoa, and cookies are waiting. Bring an extra light for getting to and from your car, and plan to stick around longer than you think you will.

Winter Candlelight Hike & Ski at Whitefish Dunes State Park
The Winter Candlelight Hike & Ski at Whitefish Dunes State Park offers a very different way to experience the park in winter. The trail follows the landscape near the lakeshore, where dunes rise quietly out of the snow, and the light from the candles keeps the pace slow and steady.
The park’s cross-country ski trails are groomed for classic skiing only. Plan to bring your own equipment, as rentals are not available. The event is hosted by the Friends of Whitefish Dunes State Park and is weather-dependent, so conditions may shape the evening, but that’s part of what makes this winter experience so special.

Candlelight Hike at Peninsula State Park
You’re invited to join the Annual Candlelight Hike on Saturday during Winterfest at Peninsula State Park to experience the park after dark. The walk begins at 5 p.m. from the parking lot just past the Fish Creek main park entrance and follows a winter trail lit to guide the way. When the hike wraps up, linger with newfound friends over refreshments and snacks before heading back out into the night.
