Cozy Up This Winter in Door County's Bed and Breakfasts

Published

As Valentine’s Day nears, thoughts turn to ways to show our adoration for those we love. What better way to reconnect and celebrate your connection than with a getaway to a Door County bed and breakfast? The lovely winter landscape encourages togetherness in cozy suites, most with fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs. From historical to contemporary, there’s a location and a place perfect for your most romantic week or weekend away.

Dream Destinations in Baileys Harbor

With hiking trails, independent restaurants, and four historic lighthouses, Baileys Harbor is a romantic dream destination for those looking to explore nature. This natural wonderland is the gateway to Lake Michigan and offers thousands of acres of preserved wilderness, some accessible on foot (or snowshoes during the winter).

You’ll discover two bed and breakfasts here, starting with Blacksmith Inn on the Shore. The shoreside guest suites of this adults-only inn span two buildings: the Zahn House featuring open views of the harbor with hammocks on the third-floor balconies, and the Harbor House, with views through a stand of pine and birch trees and a hammock on every balcony. The rustic and cozy Door County Scotland Yard Bed & Breakfast is a log home with two guest suites within walking distance of downtown. The adults-only inn features a double hammock, a croquet set, and a fire pit.

Egg Harbor’s Romantic Retreats

Treat your loved one to a retreat in one of the best small towns in America — Egg Harbor. This gateway to aquatic adventure is the heart of Door County and offers an enchanting downtown with galleries, shops and restaurants full of coastal charm.

Two Egg Harbor bed and breakfasts welcome couples and children. Mere steps from Egg Harbor Beach is The Bay Point Inn, offering spectacular water views of Green Bay atop the bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The Feathered Star Bed and Breakfast, whose namesake is inspired by quilting, offers unique rooms that showcase quilting patterns and techniques, as well as fine antiques that add an unmatched sense of Victorian style.

The Timeless Inns of Fish Creek

Nestled in a historic waterfront village is Fish Creek, the ideal getaway for shoppers and gallery hoppers. The vibrant restaurant scene offers plenty of date night fare from fine dining to pub grub, and the only fish boil available in the winter. Your significant other will relish the chance to explore the beauty of the area, including the amazing galleries, shops, lighthouses and inns dating back to the late 1800s.

The White Gull Inn not only hosts a famous traditional Door County fish boil year-round, but the inn also has the distinction of winning Good Morning America’s “Best Breakfast Challenge” with its nationally famous cherry stuffed french toast included on the extensive breakfast menu. The Thorp House Inn & Cottages offers six elegant rooms that include fresh-baked breakfast served daily in the turn-of-the-century kitchen. And Door County’s oldest operating inn is Whistling Swan Inn, built in Marinette, Wisconsin, in 1887 before it was moved across Green Bay by teams of horses in 1907.

Sister Bay’s Serenity Suites

If you need action, a stay in Northern Door County’s largest village Sister Bay is in order. The lively dining and nightlife destination is lined with vibrant restaurants offering just about any cuisine and is known as the food, dining, and beverage hub of the county. Couples can keep it cozy at pubs and taverns, romantic with waterfront dining and fun with bakeries and breweries.

You’ll find Church Hill Inn sits atop Sister Bay Hill just before entering the downtown area and features elegant English-themed guest rooms complete with antique furnishings. A full breakfast expertly prepared by the innkeeper is served daily.

Sturgeon Bay’s Charming Hideaways

Door County’s world-renowned shipbuilding hub offers all the conveniences of a big city with small-town charm. Couples can browse waterfront shopping districts or spend days or nights enjoying live music, professional theater, museums, and lighthouses. Plus, Sturgeon Bay has the most concentration of historic bed and breakfasts with seven open year-round.

Nestled among the orchards of Door County is Chanticleer Guest House Bed and Breakfast, a restored 1915 farmhouse and barn offering luxurious guest rooms and gorgeous suites tastefully decorated with period antiques. The Chanticleer Cabins offer seven cozy individual cabins with high ceilings and fireplaces.

Near downtown Sturgeon Bay is Garden Gate, a premier Victorian bed and breakfast. These suites deliver old-world charm through elegant furnishings, including chandeliers, oriental carpets, and quilts. Step back in time at The Pembrooke Inn at this 1866 Victorian Mansion located only a block from the historical downtown promenade. Each of the seven suites is beautifully preserved and decorated in its original charm. Marvel at the beveled crystal and stained glass windows, gleaming hardwood floors, and hand-carved ribbons at Scofield House. The grandest Victorian home in Sturgeon Bay was built in 1902 and retains the charm of yesteryear in each of its suites. A world of gracious elegance awaits at the White Lace Inn where 18 inviting guest rooms are tucked away in four turn-of-the-century neighboring homes furnished with antiques. In contrast, the Inn at Cedar Crossing delivers a contemporary yet classic boutique hotel experience.
