BLOG: A Weekend with the Girls and The Nicks
A successful weekend getaway to me means a combination of good company, good food & drink and lots of sunshine. And, if I’m really lucky, some great entertainment. This past weekend in Door County ended up being all of that, and more.
On a Thursday, I was contemplating what to make of my rather quiet weekend, when my schedule had a last minute change of plans. My aunt and her good friend let me know they were planning to visit Door County for the weekend and that I should join them to make it truly a girls getaway. Of course I said yes!
The weekend was a whirlwind of fun, starting with catching up over cocktails at The Wickman House, a beautiful bar & restaurant in Ellison Bay. And when I say cocktails, what I really mean is beautifully crafted concoctions of deliciousness. With one sip you know that the bartenders of The Wickman House aren’t messing around with your everyday soda and liquor mixtures. They had specially made ingredients that stock the bar to complement the flavors of each drink. Definitely worth a taste!
Saturday started with soaking in the sunshine on the shore of Europe Lake where our family has a vacation cabin. Being so far north on the peninsula really amplified the peaceful element of being surrounded by the forest and lake. Hiking the extensive trails in Newport State Park is one of my favorite ways to spend some time outside when visiting at the cabin.
As afternoon approached, we decided to grab dinner at another waterfront location on the bayside, Fred & Fuzzy’s. Situated on the shore of Little Sister Bay this restaurant is off the beaten path and has one of the best spots for watching summer sunsets. We grabbed a table near the shore and basked in the beauty of it all. This is another don’t-miss location that’s the perfect spot for summer dining. Don’t miss Tuesday evenings through mid-September where you can catch live music from 7 – 10PM while you enjoy a drink from the Tiki Bar.
And because we covered the good company, good food & drink and sunshine, we headed into town where we planned to seek out some great Saturday evening entertainment at Husby’s. Husby’s is located on the main street of Sister Bay, just as you descend the hill on Highway 42. In recent years, the pub & restaurant has capitalized on their large outdoor space and created The Garage, an outdoor bar and seating area, which has become a prominent attraction to summer visitors.
On the schedule for the evening was Door County’s own The Nicks – a duo of Nick Steingart and Nick Hoover – who’s music is a mix of acoustic/electrified roots, rock, soul, reggeabilly, folk and jive, and they describe their sound as music for all who love to shake, boogie and move. I have seen them perform numerous times around the peninsula and have never been disappointed with their performance, which is both perfect for sitting back and enjoying the sounds or getting up and moving your feet to. My favorite song of the night was an acoustic folk rendition of Metallica’s “Whiskey in the Jar.”
As the night wore on and the string lights illuminated The Garage, I was awash with warm happy feelings that only a Door County weekend can provoke. That, or potentially the several rounds of delicious cocktails had an impact. Either way, it was a memorable girls weekend that won’t soon be forgotten!
