We took a ride with my sister-in-law Julie and her boyfriend Dan last Sunday out to some small bars and restaurants in the southern Door County area. Julie was our designated driver since she was on call at Ministry Door County Hospital. We call this journey a tour of the Badlands. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a derogatory phrase. Quite the contrary. A tour of the Badlands in the winter or the summer is worth taking. There are tons of small bars on the back roads and one had 50 cent mugs of beer which was probably why the place was packed on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. At the next little bar Dan won half the pot in a bar dice game which amounted to about sixty-four bucks! We were bidding our time until our true destination, Sunset Grill opened at 4:30. Sunset Grill is a bit tricky to reach but it certainly is worth the trip.
Located on a tiny peninsula right between Little Sturgeon Bay and Rileys Bay, Sunset Grill is a hopping spot in the summer. The area is dotted with summer homes and cottages with great views of the water. Sunset grill also has a great view of... you guessed it... SUNSETS. Or as we noticed that day, ice fishing shanties. Many people don't realize the bay a.k.a Green Bay freezes in the winter. This photo is taken from Sunset Bar and Grill's deck. In the summertime they have patio tables and chairs out there. There is also a handicap ramp with easy access for wheelchairs. Knotty pine lines the large bar as does a big fish tank and taxidermy. I also noted how extremely clean it was. The bar and the dining room both overlook the water. Owners, Ron and Lynn Hedsand have owned the place since 1991 and built a dining room addition 7 years ago. Lynn is no stranger to the restaurant business as she grew up in her parent's restaurant The Mill Supper Club and now continues the tradition of great food and good service with her own family. Get out your map or GPS to get to this cleverly hidden gem. Their address is 3610 Riley's Point Road Sturgeon Bay, WI 54209 On the way back we stopped off at Waterfront Mary's a low key restaurant/bar that It isn't easy to find but it has a great location right on the water in Sturgeon Bay. It is a great place to go during the day and take in the views. They have bands on many weekends and offer nightly specials and a fish fry on Friday nights. It's nice to travel the back roads and see a different yet beautiful and fun side of Door County.
