Sunday was a beautiful day so my husband Mark, our daughter Emilie and I decided to take a little drive and check out one of the local Door County wineries. I had been to Stone's Throw Winery before but this time we thought we would spend a few hours there. We were greeted by Jasmine and the owner, Russell Turco. I had never met Russell before and we found him to be extremely warm and inviting... not to mention pretty darn fun. Jasmine took us through the wines starting with the whites of course. I am more of a red wine kind of girl and hadn't been huge fan of the whites but boy I have to say I am changing my way of thinking. I really liked the Reserve Chardonnay so much I bought a bottle. Then we headed into the reds. I loved the Rosé D' Beatrice and their 60 40 (60% Zinfandel and 40% Merlot) California red wine as well so we picked those up as well. I think Rosé is going to be my new summer drink. We used to drink it back in the day and now the lowly Rosé is on trend again... at least in my book. Stone's Throw is known for their Zinfandel (my favorite type of wine) and they make quite a few including a Zinfandel Port which is perfect as a dessert wine. After the tasting was over we headed over to Vino Vino! which is their wine bar located in the old field stone barn that the tasting room is located. Whoa... Emilie, Russell and me... I wish I had a better picture because it was the coolest bar I have been in in awhile. It is sleek and modern and a bit of a shift from many Door County wine establishments. Those are all wine bottles in the back (in case you thought it was just a painting) and there is a huge mural on the opposite wall. In the summer, the wine bar offers tapas and from time to time outdoor shrimp boils and other events. There are also outdoor patio tables as well. The wine bar is also available for private parties and events. Vino Vino! is definitely on my summer to do list... a glass or two of wine and tapas in beautiful surroundings. Now that's just screaming my name. Russell explained more about the winery to us and then we headed in to the barrel room where the magic is made. We got to sample wines right out of the barrels. Many of these wines weren't "finished" but honestly, I couldn't tell. One of Russell's main guys all the way from CA was there tending to the wine and climbed around like a monkey on top of the barrels to sneak us a taste! They offer around 293 different wines and also have their Ventura Wine Club. As a member you receive discounts on wine and get shipments of pre-release or newly released wine six times per year in addition to a recipe specifically paired to the wines. We had a great day and Russell and his gang were a hoot. I think Stone's Throw Winery should be on everybody's Door County to-do list!
