Woodwalk Gallery: Breezy, Barny, Beautiful
One of my favorite spots to stop on a summer day is Woodwalk Gallery. Located south of Egg Harbor less than a mile off of Highway 42, it's a gorgeous setting including classic Wisconsin barns turned galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden and the studio of master painter Margaret Lockwood. But Woodwalk is so much more than just a gallery - it's really a center for the arts, featuring theater performances, Midsummer's Music concerts, the Jeanne Kuhns folk concert series, and art classes including printmaking, papermaking and basket weaving. Oh, and did I mention that Woodwalk is one of Door County's most popular wedding venues? This funky vintage chandelier welcomes visitors into the barn/gallery. This year Woodwalk celebrates 20 years in Door County, and they're doing it in style. In addition to their usual busy calendar of concerts, gallery openings, and classes, Margaret challenged artists to create a 20" by 20" piece in honor of the auspicious celebration. That show opens Sunday August 10, but don't wait until them to visit. As usual, Woodwalk represents some of Door County and the region's finest artistic talent, including both 2-D and 3-D work. When I walked through this weekend, I particularly enjoyed the paintings of Paula Swayden-Grebel, a Door County seasonal resident whose work I had never seen before, and some news works by Archelle Wolst. Paintings by Archelle Wolst No matter how much they have going on, Woodwalk Gallery owners Margaret Lockwood and Allin Walker seem to take it all in stride. There's a relaxed, easy vibe at Woodwalk, and Margaret and Allin are almost always on hand to greet visitors, answer questions or just smile as you take it all in. For a breezy, barny, beautiful day seeing some of Door County's finest art, Woodwalk can't be beat. Hungry for learning? Take a class at Woodwalk's studio.
