The Perfect Getaway
Jane and I are laid back, easy to please people. Our fun revolves around long walks, sunsets, casual dinners and spontaneous getaways. So when we found ourselves without kids for a weekend last summer (at ages 20 and 16 then, they didn't require babysitting anyway) I decided to surprise Jane with a short stay up north. When I told her that she had "only room to take things that would fit in one side saddle" she became a bit nervous! She was able to "down-size" her necessities and off we went! I had done some checking into quaint hotels in the Sister Bay area (a short 25 mile drive from Sturgeon Bay), as we both love the picturesque views and nightlife that this village offers. After a beautiful, scenic ride up Bayshore Drive and Highway 42 from Egg Harbor, we found ourselves at the Village View Inn. This small, family-owned hotel is right in the heart of downtown Sister Bay. It is a cozy, clean and friendly hotel that offers visitors rooms in the main building. Village View also has cottages that are decorated in greys and reds like the hotel; these are located in the back of the property. When the owner greeted us we felt as though we were family! If you are looking for an affordable, friendly, clean stay, The Village View Inn is for you!
The perfect part about staying at the Village View Inn is that it is within walking distance to any shop or nightlife you may desire! One of our favorite restaurants in the county is Husby's; located right down the street from the Village View Inn. Husby's bar/restaurant offers seating inside and out; the bar in the back is a great place to sit and enjoy a night under the stars in Door County. It was fun to see one of my former students working at the outdoor bar! Husby's has a menu with a wide variety that is sure to please anyone. From burgers to soups and salads; you won't go away hungry!
Of course, one of the "deals" I made with Jane was that we would fit in some shopping (I actually don't mind this...her dad taught me to "just take a book" and the time will pass quickly!) When Jane requested we go to the Country Walk shops I gladly agreed and knew I wouldn't need my book as this area of shops offers something for everyone. I was looking forward to spending time in the bookstore! The Country Walk shops are located in a beautiful garden setting. There are two levels of shops, restaurants and galleries. We spent quite a bit of time walking through the shops, grabbing a snack and people watching!
My shopping request was for Bayshore Outfitters located about a block away from The Country Walk Shops. Being an avid outdoorsman, I enjoy making a trip to Bayshore Outfitters whenever I can. Any type of paddle sports (canoeing, kayaking, etc) or hiking gear that you may need can be found here. Bayshore Outfitters offers daily kayak tours as well as advice on any type of outdoor activity the county offers. One of my fellow insiders, Casey St. Henry, works as the companies program manager. Stop in, say hello and take a kayak tour while you're in the county! www.kayakdoorcounty.com
As the day came to a close, we decided that ordering a pizza and taking it back to the hotel to eat on our deck with a few beers would be the perfect way to end a perfect day. We went across the street to Northern Grill and Pizza and placed our carry out order. Northern Grill has fantastic pizza with dough made everyday by scratch. They also offer steak, pasta, lasagna, salads and hearty sandwiches. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. The Northern Grill has a game room, pool table, and large parties are welcome.
As our order was called and we left the restaurant, there was one little problem...it decided to rain and we were on my cycle! You should have seen the looks (more laughs) we got as we drove away; Jane on the back, pizza in her hand and the rain coming down as hard as it could! We made it back okay and enjoyed a perfect ending to a perfect getaway! As always I end with a favorite quote: Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint on it you can. - Danny Kaye
