Genuine American

Three Day – Two Night Tour

Day One:

10:00AM

There is no better place to start your journey than the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay. The museum offers docent-guided tours of exhibits that span the nautical history of Door County, from early American Indian canoes to post-World War II bulk carriers. And if there’s time, head across the bridge and enjoy the Door County Historical Museum, named the best small museum in the Midwest by the Chicago Tribune. Times vary. www.dcmm.org

11:00AM

Next, hop aboard the old Chicago Fire Boat, the Fred A. Busse, and take a cruise through the harbor. This fireboat was constructed in Sturgeon Bay after World War II and served the Chicago Fire Department for many years. It now houses a small museum dedicated to Chicago’s firefighting efforts. www.doorcountyfireboatcruises.com

12:30PM

Make your way north on Hwy 42 to eat lunch at Shipwrecked Restaurant, Brewery and Inn, in Egg Harbor. This historic location was one of Al Capone’s favorite hangouts back in the roaring ‘20s. Tunnels still remain underneath the building that lead all over Egg Harbor. Capone used these secret pathways for his quick escapes! Call for reservations. www.shipwreckedmicrobrew.com

1:30PM

After lunch, continue north on Hwy 42 to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park, in Fish Creek. Built in 1868 and automated in 1926, the lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through the narrow, treacherous east channel leading to the city of Green Bay. www.dcmm.org

2:00PM

Next, visit one of America’s oldest traditions at Lautenbauch’s Orchard Country Winery and Market in Fish Creek. This 100-acre farm features pick-your-own cherry and apple trees, a vineyard and winery open for tours and wine tasting. There is also a market and wine shop, picnicking and play areas. www.orchardcountry.com

3:00PM

See how things were done more than 100 years ago at the Corner of the Past and Anderson House Museums in Sister Bay. This historic site features late-1800’s furnishings as well as historical photographs and artifacts depicting Sister Bay’s rich history. These buildings include a large barn, granary, machine shop, two log cabins and a migrant worker's cabin, summer kitchen, sawmill and blacksmith’s barn—and they are all open for visitation and your enjoyment. www.sisterbayhistory.org
