Walleye, bass, brown trout, northern pike, lake trout, salmon, and pan fish can be found in abundance and record sizes in our lakes and streams. The waters surrounding Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island have become known in recent years for having one of the best small-mouth bass fisheries in America. Northern pike can be found all along the bay side of the peninsula, with Washington Island's Detroit Harbor being a local hotspot.
Brook trout and rainbow trout are common early spring catches in Hein's Creek and Hibbard's Creek.
Early April usually means ice-out and time for brown and brook trout fishing in and around Baileys Harbor on the lake side and Ephraim's Eagle Harbor on the bay side. Tasty smelt can be netted along the Lake Michigan shoreline, usually around late April.
Trout fishing off the ship canal in Sturgeon Bay kicks off in May and continues through the start of salmon fishing season, which begins in early June and continues through summer.
Even the novice angler can catch a lifetime memory.
Experienced charter captains operate throughout the peninsula with many located in the greater Sturgeon Bay area, Baileys Harbor, Gills Rock, and Ephraim.
In the winter, the waters of Green Bay on the bay side seem to magically spout villages of ice shanties. Perch is the usual prey, but you can never tell when a large northern or walleye will be pulled through the fishing hole.
With over 300 miles of shoreline and several inland lakes, fishing spots are not hard to find.
