Grievance & Adjudication

Membership Grievance and Adjudication Process

  • In accordance with other ethical standards, there should be a Member Code of Conduct similar to those in effect for the Board of Directors and Staff. This will be posted on the members’ website and incorporated into the membership contract.
  • Instead of separating grievances by type, “any behavior that violates Membership Standards” may be brought to the attention of the Executive Committee.
  • The Executive Committee will convene to consider whether the complaint is egregious or natural (as in the case of franchisees), and appoint an ad hoc committee of three to adjudicate. This ad hoc committee need not be restricted to the Board, but may include representatives from Member businesses.
  • The ad hoc committee will be chosen on a case-by-case basis for peer review as determined by the Executive Committee; e.g. if there is a complaint against a lodging facility, the committee may choose to not have or to have other lodging owners conduct the review.
  • The ad hoc committee will determine time lines for corrective action, and any penalties, including revocation of membership.
  • It will be publicly stated that if Membership is terminated for breach of Standards, no fees will be returned.
  • Re-instatement will be determined by the Executive Committee on presentation of demonstrable corrections to the original grievance as recommended by Membership staff.
