April 29. Two villages in Door County have been awarded top honors in the Wisconsin’s 12 Best Towns contest as selected by the readers of Wisconsin Trails magazine. Egg Harbor was voted best small town and Fish Creek was chosen as the best picture-taking town.
The awards for the state’s 12 best towns were recently announced by editor Kristen Scheuing in conjunction with the release of latest issue of Wisconsin Trails magazine. A 6-page article in the May/June 2011 issue highlights the 12 winners, including both Egg Harbor and Fish Creek in their respective categories.
Wisconsin Trails organized the contest and asked readers to nominate and vote on the winners in each of 12 categories. Voting was conducted online and took place over a 2 month period earlier this year, with the winners being featured in the magazine’s May/June issue, on newsstands now.
“We are so proud to have Fish Creek and Egg Harbor selected as two of the 12 best towns in Wisconsin,” said Jack Moneypenny, President/CEO of the Door County Visitor Bureau. “With so many unique communities in the state that offer visitors a variety of experiences, it’s great to see two of our communities in Door County make this prestigious list.”
Wisconsin Trails said this while highlighting Fish Creek’s award as best picture-taking town: “ Perched on the picturesque Door County peninsula overlooking Green Bay, Fish Creek’s small-town charm and gleaming water views provide endless photo ops.”
Bob Spielman, president of the Fish Creek Civic Association, would agree. “In Fish Creek we have always been proud of our small town charm, historic buildings, miles of shoreline, and Peninsula State Park,” he said. “To be considered one of Wisconsin’s 12 Best Towns, and the Best Picture Taking Town is a great honor. We always knew Fish Creek was a great place to take a picture, and an even better place to get in the picture!”
As for Egg Harbor, Wisconsin Trails said it “has everything you seek in a small town: friendly people, unique shops, homey restaurants, and is situated on one of Wisconsin’s most treasured natural resources.”
“There’s plenty to love about Egg Harbor,” says Jeff Larson, president of the Egg Harbor Business Association. “From shopping and wineries to farm markets, a great new marina, breathtaking sunsets and arts, Egg Harbor is a wonderful small town. Budget Travel recognized Egg Harbor as a ‘cool’ small town last year, and now Wisconsin Trails best small town this year. We’re thrilled!”
In addition to being featured in the current issue of the magazine, both communities have access to a ‘Best Towns’ logo from Wisconsin Trails and are also being featured on the Wisconsin Trails web site.
